Southeast Iowa, once a well kept secret is rapidly becoming recognized as one of the premiere trophy whitetail deer hunting areas anywhere. Turkeys are also plentiful.

Brian Lindberg grew up hunting this area’s rolling hills, creek bottoms, hardwoods, marshes and farm fields. He began selectively outfitting several years back. Brian runs a successful insurance agency and that has given him exposure to some of the area’s best country. Soap Creek currently has access to over 9,000 private acres of prime hunting habitat. Soap Creek isn’t a high volume commercial operation, because Brian believes that large numbers of hunters and quality hunting just don’t mix. Trophy whitetails especially, simply won’t take that kind of pressure.

Soap Creek hunts are best described as semi-guided. They have tree stands positioned but most hunters bring their own. Brian has two cabins and hunts are available with or without lodging. Hunters are responsible for meals, either cooking in the cabins or eating in local restaurants.

Our 2008 season...
Just a quick update on how the season is going. Here are some Missouri kills. We have had some misses with gun and bow on 175 and 180 class bucks in Iowa as well as two in Missouri. One farm has heard a cougar a few times and the bucks seen have been in the 140's on down. Two of the attached photos are from that farm but the potential should be higher. The other Missouri farm where the buck in the 160's was taken has had a buck in the 170's and 180's missed this week. One hunter missed three shooters so he threw his gun away while his partner missed one that was in the 160's. I will follow up with the Iowa bucks later.
Now is the time to book your turkey hunts as well as your Missouri deer hunts.

Well the first gun season in Iowa has come to a close. A few big bucks were seen but most were bedded tight recovering after the rut. We had three hunters in camp. We did see one in the 170's and also one in the 160's. Neither buck had any lead thrown at them. Brice shot this buck on his next to last evening with us.
Temps have been as low as zero in the mornings. I have two youth hunters in this next weekend so wish me luck. Most of the time it is tough to connect for them by the time we try and put it all together. On the other hand we may have one of these young hunters score on one of the 170's out there.
In Iowa there was another monster taken that will score around 260 inches nontypical with around 30 points. The photo is floating around already. It may come in a close 2nd to the Albia buck.
Bow dates are starting to fill up for Missouri 2009 so be talking with your hunting partners.
Our 2007 season...
The 2007 hunting season will be hard to beat. The season started in October with the temperatures and the moon being perfect for the bow hunters. We almost had a 100% success rate in Iowa for the bow hunters. Some hunters reported seeing as many as 60 different bucks while hunting here. One hunter after taking his buck filmed 15 bucks in one evening. Most hunters saw bucks in the 160’s and 170’s with a couple of 180’s being sighted.
We had a very old unique buck taken in Missouri that scored over 171 with 21 points. We still have one of the 190 to 200 class bucks in Missouri that we have seen each year. By the end of December he had already shed his horns.
We also had some unique non typical bucks taken with junk on one side while the other side was normal. We had some great bucks taken with great character this year. After the fist bow hunters finished up and the full moon came back it was as if you flipped a switch. Daytime activity almost stopped for the bigger bucks above 140 inches. We still managed to take some good bucks in November and December with a lot of snow on the ground. When thinking about deer hunting with us think about turkey hunting with the idea that you are scouting for the upcoming deer hunt.

Our 2005 season...
The 2005 season was very positive in regards to the great bucks taken as
well as the bucks that were seen by our hunters. We had more bucks taken
this year in the 160 to 167 class range then in any other year. Hunters
still missed shots this year at deer in the 150's, 160's & 180's
The Missouri land has taken off since some of it has been under our control
for five years now. The two largest bucks seen in Missouri were 180 inches
and 200 inches. Both bucks were seen without a clean shot opportunity by
our hunters. The 200 inch has now been seen three years in a row on the
same farm.
New for 2006, I am being forced to raise our minimum class buck from 130 inches to 140 inches. If a hunters wants to take a smaller buck he may do so if he wants to pay a $500 payment for the buck. At Soap Creek Outfitters 98% of our hunters see the bucks in the 140 to 150 class range while hunting so this shouldn't be a problem if they will hunt for at least two days before pulling the trigger. 80% of our hunters this year saw bucks in the 160 to 170 class range. Also for 2006 we are offering the chance to carry a muzzleloader during the shotgun season if you draw an Iowa tag. Remember to take a kid hunting!!
